Do you feel lethargic and sad for no reason? Are your everyday tasks becoming too hard to keep up with? You may be struggling with depression.
If you or a loved one are battling depression, you may want to look into the different medication options available. However, there are many alternative holistic therapies that can help you.
Kelly Brogan M.D. reports of a recent study set out to answer the question– “can probiotics treat mood”? Although the study was small, it was of the highest quality — double-blind-placebo-controlled and randomized.
The study examined 40 individuals who had been diagnosed with major depression were given either placebo or probiotics.
At the end of eight weeks, for those who had taken the probiotics, there was a significant difference in mood as assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory. Additionally, blood work revealed significant decreases in serum insulin levels, improvement in insulin-resistant assessment, and a significant rise in plasma total glutathione (GSH) levels compared with the placebo. The implication is the bacteria may potentially help regulate the stress response.
